Objective: Install the mast on the boat safely before launching, without the use of a crane.

Equipment required

• The complete mast
• Shrouds
• Forestay, potentially fitted with its furling system
• Mast and rigging pins and split pins
• A pair of gloves (recommended)
• Adjustable pliers
• Wire cutters
• Vernier caliper

Preliminary checks

• Position the boat on a flat, stable surface.
• Check that the mast is free from any damage.
• Inspect the condition of the shrouds, forestay and attachment points.
• Make sure there are no overhead power lines nearby.

Step 1: Prepare the mast

• Position the mast along the boat's centreline.
• Untangle the shrouds and forestay.
• Check that no cable or line could snag during the lifting operation.

Step 2: Install the mast foot

• Position the mast foot in its fitting.
• Install the mast-foot pin if the boat is equipped with one.
• Check that the mast can pivot freely.

Step 3: Raise the mast

• Stand in line with the boat's centreline.
• Gradually lift the mast while walking forward.
• Keep the mast perfectly centred to avoid any lateral loading.
• Once the mast is vertical, hold it firmly in position.

Tip: With a lightweight mast, one person can generally carry out this operation, but assistance is recommended for beginners.

It is also possible to secure the mast during the raising operation using a halyard that has been routed through a block at the bow and led back to the cockpit, through a clutch and onto a winch.

Step 4: Attach the forestay

• Keep the mast vertical.
• Attach the forestay to the bow chainplate.
• Install the pin and then the securing split pin.
• Check that the connection is properly locked.

Note: Ideally, have a second person carry out this final step and check all the pins and split pins installed by the first person.

Step 5: Check the shrouds

• Check that the port and starboard shrouds are correctly connected.
• Make sure they are neither twisted nor crossed.
• Using the vernier caliper, check that the turnbuckles have the same amount of thread showing on both port and starboard sides.
• Check the rigging tension and the longitudinal alignment of the mast.

Common mistakes to avoid

❌ Raising the mast with tangled shrouds.

❌ Allowing the mast to move sideways during the lifting operation.

❌ Forgetting a split pin or failing to open it correctly.

❌ Stepping the mast near an overhead power line.

❌ Carrying out the operation in strong winds without assistance.

Safety instructions

• Wear non-slip footwear.
• Never stand underneath the mast during the operation.
• Stop the operation in the event of strong gusts.
• Ask for assistance if the weight of the mast or the weather conditions require it.

When in doubt, don't take risks. Mast stepping involves significant loads and should always be carried out in controlled conditions.
