In this tutorial, we’ll show you how to install a Staysail on a furling system, simply and safely.

1. Prepare the equipment

Start by bringing the Staysail and furling system onto the deck. Choose a clear area with enough space to handle the sail comfortably.

Identify the three points of the Staysail:

• Clew (with Velcro)
• Tack (lower point, on the furling system side. To distinguish it from the head, it is the end of the sail closest to the clew)
• Head (upper point)

Also check that the furling system is in good condition and that the furling line is free and clear.

2. Attach the furling system to the tack

Start by connecting the furling system to the tack of the Staysail.

Make sure the connection is properly secured and that the quick-release pin is closed.

3. Connect the sheets

Make sure the sheet system does not interfere with the genoa sheets.

You can use the same genoa sheet car, but pay close attention to friction between the two sheets — the genoa sheet and the Staysail sheet.

4. Connect the halyard to the head

Next, attach the halyard to the head of the Staysail.

Before hoisting, make sure the halyard is not twisted or tangled around the forestay or standing rigging.

Important: A Staysail on a furling system must be fitted with an anti-torsion cable.

If it is not already installed, attach the bottom of the cable to the furling system. Then use the messenger line, which should already be installed inside the sail’s sleeve, to pull it through the sail.

Attach the top of the cable to the head using a textile lashing.

Check that the cable is straight and free of twists. You can adjust its tension once the sail is unfurled and the luff has been properly tensioned.

5. Hoist the Staysail

Gradually hoist the Staysail using the halyard, keeping slight tension on it to prevent folds or twists.

Once the sail is at the top, tension the halyard correctly: proper tension is essential for smooth and efficient furling.

You can make a pre-set mark where the halyard exits the jammer, giving you a reference for next time.

Check the sheet routing — outside or inside the shrouds depending on your setup — and make sure the sheet runs freely.

7. Test the furling system

Test both furling and unfurling.

Check that the sail rolls up evenly and smoothly, and make sure there are no tight spots or points of resistance.

8. Storage

For short-term storage, you can keep the sail alongside the mast. This makes it easier for the genoa to pass during tacks before deploying the Staysail.

Alternatively, you can lower the sail and store it rolled inside its sakacode®, ready to be deployed quickly.

The sakacode® can also be left attached to the lifelines or on deck, with all three points of the Staysail already connected, allowing for very quick deployment.

Important tip

Correct halyard tension and a properly installed anti-torsion cable are the keys to efficient furling.

Take the time to adjust the entire system properly before heading out sailing.
