  1. How-to
  2. Installing a Spinnaker Sock (T010)

Hello everyone, and thank you for joining us for this new SailHero tutorial.

Today, we’re going to show you how to install a spinnaker sock. This is a simple operation, but it requires a little care and method to prevent the sail from twisting and to ensure easy handling of the spinnaker while sailing.

1. Prepare the equipment

Start by laying your spinnaker and spinnaker sock out on the deck.

Identify the three corners of the spinnaker:

Head – the top of the sail

Tack – the forward corner

Clew – the aft corner

2. Check the spinnaker sock

Take the sock and identify:

The top, with its textile shackle for connecting the halyard

The bottom, with the rigid or soft mouth

The endless control line, used to raise and lower the sock

Make sure the lines run freely and that the sock is not twisted.

3. Connect the sock to the spinnaker head

Attach the sock halyard directly to the spinnaker head using the textile shackle.

This is an essential step: the sock must remain securely connected to the top of the sail.

4. Feed the spinnaker into the sock

Pass the spinnaker head through the mouth of the sock, at the same point where you connect your spinnaker halyard.

Then start feeding the sail into the sock, working from the head downwards.

Take your time and proceed gradually:

Feed the sail in one metre at a time.

Follow the seams carefully to prevent the spinnaker from twisting.

Keep an eye on all three corners so that they remain clearly identified.

5. Bring out the tack and clew

Once the entire sail is inside the sock, make sure that the two corners are correctly brought back out:

The tack on one side

The clew on the other side

Be careful not to cross these two corners.

6. Final check

Before finishing, check that:

The sock moves up and down smoothly using the endless control line.

The spinnaker sheets and tack line are correctly connected to the appropriate corners of the spinnaker.

Make sure that nothing is twisted or crossed before using the sail.

7. Storage

You can then fold the sock neatly into the spinnaker bag, ready for the sail to be deployed.
