  1. How-to
  2. How to Tie a Bosun’s Whistle Lanyard Knot (T018)

Hello! Thank you for joining us for this new Sailhero tutorial.

Today, we will learn how to tie a boatswain’s whistle knot. This knot can be used to create a practical handle or decorative loop on a rope, and it is a useful piece of seamanship to know on board.

Tip: use a soft rope that is not too stiff while learning.

You will need:

·         A rope (of suitable length)

·         A lighter

Steps:

·         Take the rope in your hands and estimate the length needed to make the knot.

·         Form a first loop by crossing the working end over the standing part.

·         Make a second loop next to the first one, keeping the same direction.

·         Slightly overlap the two loops while keeping them flat.

·         Pass a bight of the working end through the loops to form the center of the knot.

·         Gradually adjust the knot by pulling on the different parts of the rope until it takes its final shape.

·         Tighten the knot firmly and check that it is neat, symmetrical, and secure.

SailHero tip: as with any marine knot, practice it several times on shore before using it on board. Repetition is the best way to make it quick and reliable in real conditions.
